Sculptures by DAVID BOOKER
After several solo exhibition in Sydney, Cittą della Pieve, Spello, Montepulciano and Paciano, we can now meet again David Booker's sculptures in Castiglion Fiorentino's main square.
Sixteen wood and marble monumental sculptures dominate the Loggiato Vasariano. The exhibition gives a intense evocative power to this Renaissance space.
Imposing and sober figures in their enigmatic stillness evoke archaic atmpspheres in balance between the mythic dimension of the origin and a hieratic eastern spirituality; at the same time you can recognize fltered quotations of classic and modern western statuary.
Serenity and tension, mistery and irony are all present in these compositions of human figures which aspire to become harmonious part of the surrounding space and to evoke inner images, thoughts and feelings able to revive the everyday space perception.
The work titles hint indirectly and sometimes playfully at timeless situations which reveal the artist's imagination.
In one of the most interesting sculptures of the show, "The Violet Boy.Come's Violet Valley. Hy (Happy Happy Happy)", David Booker combines the form language with the colour language for the first time, choosing a natural but unusual color. The title refes to a valley of the Australian desert which is covered with violet flowers only when it rains (which is rarely) but realistic detail is soon forgotten because it simbolizes inner life, the childish wonder which is poured forth by the sudden view and then the following sense of happiness and ripeness.
The statues, full of rigour and energy, show a technique which is both refined and strong: very smooth volumes are combined with a surface where you can trace the marks of the many repeated gestures of the sculptor in his constant, almost endless search for the form.
The artist, David Booker, comes from Sydney, Australia.
He was born in 1954, studied Art in Hobart, Tasmania and lived and worked in Italy, first in Tuscany, then in Umbria.
